Vintage Rifles Part 2

Every Wednesday on the Boone and Crockett Club's Facebook page, we post a vintage photo of a hunter and their rifle. Sometimes, we know the make and model of the rifle; sometimes, we don't. Most times, we leave it up to the collective genius of our Facebook friends who are rifle aficionados. Here are some of the highlights from #whatriflewednesday.

3. UTAH 1940

This is Milton Hunt back with an absolute specimen of a Utah mule deer. According to the original score chart, the buck had a 45-inch spread and 41 points. On Facebook, one commenter noted that his great-grandfather bought the gun from Milton, and it was eventually passed down to him. He says it's a .300 Savage Model 99.

H.S. Compton killed this pronghorn 20 miles southwest of Cody. The Facebook consensus claims that this is most definitely a Remington Model 8, likely in a .35 caliber. We tend to agree.

7. Colorado 1876

Martha Ann Maxwell was a naturalist who helped create modern-day taxidermy, influencing early Boone and Crockett Club members and taxidermists Carl Akeley and William Hornaday. Regarding the rifle, one Facebook commenter wrote that the ammo on this Evans Repeating rifle "feeds through the stock via 'Archemedian screw' and the internal mechanism is similar to the Spencer…. Only the hammer is internal on these rifles."
