15 Jaw Dropping B&C Entries - Volume 1

1 OF 15 — WYOMING MULE DEER

With the largest typical mule deer ever to come out of Sublette County, Wyoming, Michael J. Huish’s grin says it all. He killed this mule deer with a 6.5x284 shooting a 143-grain Hornady bullet at 325 yards in mid-September. Once the 60-day drying period ended, his deer scored 210-5/8 points and had a greatest spread of 31-2/8 inches. Huish's buck ranks at the top of the typical mule deer category for the 31st Big Game Awards entry period, with 7 months left before the entry deadline, we'll see if it keeps the top spot.

2 of 15 — ARIZONA DESERT SHEEP

Scroll through the records at Big Game Records Live!, and you’ll soon realize the mystery that surrounds desert sheep. More than a few of the top 25 entries are “pick-ups” or of unknown origins. One unknown entry goes back more than a century. 

Now, fast-forward to December 1, 2019. That’s when Michael S. Kentera’s 143-grain bullet from his 6.5 Creedmoor took this fine desert specimen in Pinal County, Arizona. His ram is the 19th in the All-time ranking, 12th for desert rams in the Lower 48 and the sixth largest to come out of Arizona.

3 of 15 — WYOMING PRONGHORN

Wyoming is synonymous with cowboys, wide open spaces, and really, really big pronghorn—the latter being why Ashton F. Harrow was in Carbon County in the fall of 2019. With those horns nearly hitting 17 inches long, his pronghorn ranks 74th overall and 16th for the state. He took this great buck with a 6.5x284 at 175 yards. His 6.5 was shooting a 140-grain Berger bullet.  As a youth hunter, 16 years old or younger when he harvested his pronghorn, Harrow will be invited to take part in the Club's Generation Next trophy display and banquet. His pronghorn currently ranks 5th in the 31st Big Game Awards Entry Period. If it holds that rank until the close of the entry period, it may also be invited to the Judges Panel.

4 of 15 — MINNESOTA BLACK BEAR

Kayla T. Kullhem’s black bear is the biggest to come out of Minnesota since 2017, and her bruin now ranks fifth in the state. Interestingly, Aitkin County has three entries in the top 10, the most of any other Minnesota county, according to Big Game Records Live!. Her bear fell to the classic .270 and a 130-grain bullet.

5 of 15 — ALASKA ROCKY MOUNTAIN GOAT

Louis W. Breland traveled from Alabama to Alaska in September 2019 to hunt goats. All those air miles, not to mention hiking, paid off. His .300 Win Mag and 180-grain Barnes bullet took this goat at 200 yards. The minimum score for the All-time record book is 50 inches, and Breland’s billy cleared that by more than two inches, scoring 52-2/8 points. This was Breland’s first record goat.

6 of 15 — NEWFOUNDLAND WOODLAND CARIBOU

If you’re a fan of woodland caribou, then you should know the name Sam’s Pond, Newfoundland. Do note that it’s bigger than it sounds. That’s where five of the top 50 biggest All-time woodland caribou have been taken, according to Big Game Records Live!. 

Derek M. Gentile’s “bou” is no exception. On a calm, sunny October day in 2018, Gentile had this bull in his Leupold scope at 96 yards. With his .300 Winchester Mag. shooting a 180-grain Barnes bullet, the hunt was over by 9 a.m. His woodland caribou has an All-time rank of 38, fourth largest for Sam’s Pond, and currently stands at the number 2 spot for the 31st Awards Period.

7 of 15 — CALIFORNIA COLUMBIA BLACKTAIL

At dusk, young hunter Shelby Dunlap had this Columbia blacktail 175 yards downrange of her .25-06. Her 90-grain bullet did the job on this buck, which scores 146-2/8 B&C points, ranking it 312th overall and 156th for California. As a youth hunter, 16 years old or young when she harvested her deer, Dunlap will be invited to take part in the Club's Generation Next trophy display and banquet as part of the 31st Big Game Awards Program.

8 of 15 — NORTH DAKOTA BIGHORN

Jackson C. Lackner's bighorn sheep is the second highest scoring ram in North Dakota. He took this bighorn with a 6.5 Creedmoor shooting a 105-grain Berger bullet. A quick search in Big Game Records Live! tells us that North Dakota only has 5 sheep in the record book. Four have been entered since 2017 and a sole entry from 1880. That vintage ram was taken by Howard Eaton.

9 of 15 — NUNAVUT MUSK OX

With a throwback to the Pleistocene, musk ox look like they can survive anything. Well, almost anything. On a sunny, 60-degree day in late August 2019 in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, Canada, Jim Horneck’s arrow found its mark on this musk ox that scored an even 114 points. It ranks 136th All-time and is Mr. Horneck’s second musk ox entry, according to Big Game Records Live!.

10 of 15 — OKLAHOMA WHITETAIL

In the fall of 2019, Troy N. Bryant killed this incredible typical Oklahoma whitetail in Harper County at 300 yards using his .300 Weatherby and 180-grain Weatherby bullets. According to the score sheet available at Big Game Records Live!, both G-3s measure over a foot and one G-2 is nearly 13 inches. Gross score hits 199-3/8 points, with the final B&C score is a smidge over 190 points. That score puts Bryant's whitetail in the number 2 spot for Oklahoma.

11 of 15 — MEXICO DESERT SHEEP

Desert sheep hunting is a dusty affair, but that didn’t dissuade Jerry R. Tyrrell on his sheep hunt in Sonora, Mexico, in January 2020. His ram, which hits an even 190, ranks 14th overall for desert bighorn and takes the top spot south of the border. Tyrrell's desert sheep also ranks at the top spot so far in the 31st Big Game Awards Entry Period, which concludes on December 31, 2021. His ram fell to a 6.5 shooting a 140-grain Berger bullet.

12 of 15 — SOUTH DAKOTA BISON

Apparently, 124-2/8 is a fairly common, albeit still large, score for bison. Kim Greene’s 2016 bull is tied for 95th place in the All-time ranks along with 12 other bison, according to Big Game Records Live!. For the 31st Big Game Awards entry period, Greene's bull ranks fourth. He took this brute with a .338 Ultra Mag. shooting a 250-grain A-frame bullet in Custer State Park.

13 of 15 — ALASKA DALL'S SHEEP

Between 2005 and 2019, there have been only two Dall’s sheep to make the top 50 All-time list, according to data compiled in Big Game Records Live!. And then came along Louis W. Breland who, in 2020, killed not just a top 50 ram, but the sixth largest Dall’s sheep in the record book. It fell to a .300 Winchester Mag. shooting a 180-grain Barnes. His ram scores 184-1/8 points and made its home in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska where 4 of the top 10 rams have been taken. This incredible ram holds the number 1 spot for the 31st Big Game Awards Entry Period, barring an unprecented deluge of Dall's sheep entries in the next few months, Breland's ram will likely be invited to the 31st Big Game Awards Judges Panel.

14 of 15 — ARIZONA BIGHORN

Randy A. Weems got an early Christmas present from Arizona Game and Fish in 2019 when he learned he was drawn for a bighorn tag. Arizona’s bighorn season runs December 1-30, and Weems took full advantage. With his bow cranked to 65 pounds, he killed this ram on December 6 in Gila County using 100-grain broadheads and 400-grain arrows. This great ram ranks number two in the state and is less than an inch shy of the top spot.

15 of 15 — ALASKA GRIZZLY BEAR

Measuring a grizzly bear skull is infinitely easier than hunting one. Measure length, measure width and add the two numbers. Done. Roger F. Pascavis’ skull measured 16-10/16 inches long, by 10-5/16 inches wide for a final B&C score of 26-15/16. This earned his Alaska grizzly a tie for 14th largest of All-time, according to Big Game Records Live!. He was shooting a .338 Winchester Mag. and a 250-grain bullet.
